Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify and understand the life change events of patients with AIDS.

Method: Data were collected through the in-depth interview and observation method of 3 men with AIDS and analysed by the Colaizzi method.

Result: Ten essential themes emerged from the analysis. ¨ç Fear and want to die by a shock ¨è Have anger and revengeful thought out of prejudice ¨é Have no place to stay and be in financial difficulties ¨ê Have symptoms but not want to take medicine ¨ë Try to avoid sexual relations but have difficulties in satisfying sexual desire ¨ì Want to complain but fear to be exposed ¨í Feel anxious about and guilty for the family ¨î Manage health by myself but want to do it systematically ¨ï Want to help one another among infected persons but have conflicts ¨ð Enjoy or have a hope in order to forget

Conclusion: The results of this study may help nurses and other health care workers to implement more efficient nursing strategies for patients with AIDS by more deeply understanding experience. The specific strategy that based on the concrete psychosocial intervention is needed in the nursing practice.
